The Serenade in C major, KV 648, known as the "Very Little Night Music," is a newly discovered piece by the composer Mozart. Unearthed by researchers at the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, it was found in the Carl Ferdinand Becker collection at the Leipzig Municipal Library while working on updating the Köchel catalogue, a pivotal reference on Mozart's musical works. This composition, consisting of seven miniature movements for a string trio, was written by Mozart during his early youth, believed to be around the mid to late 1760s, specifically for his sister Maria Anna (affectionately known as Nannerl). On September 19, 2024, the International Mozarteum Foundation showcased the piece to the public, led by Dr. Ulrich Leisinger, dedicated to researching and preserving Mozart's cultural legacy. Demonstrating the rapid reception of the work, an adaptation of the "Very Little Night Music" was discovered in Leipzig. Due to unprecedented global interest, the renowned Gewandhausorchester Leipzig promptly redirected a portion of their recording schedule to feature the Serenade in C with their former Music Director and Conductor Laureate, Herbert Blomstedt. The orchestral version reflects the progression of Mozart's famous "Little Night Music," the Serenade in G major. Originally composed for a chamber ensemble, it has now become iconic in its orchestral adaptation for strings.
