Latvia's most compelling pianist celebrates Estonia's greatest living composer. Set on a wooded promontory near the Gulf of Finland, the Arvo Pärt Centre in the composer's hometown of Laulasmaa is the perfect setting for this 90th-birthday tribute from Georgijs Osokins, a pianist – and recent Deutsche Grammophon signing – who has been described as one of the most original imaginations in contemporary piano playing. Naturally, he plays Pärt (including the hugely popular Fratres). But he plays Bach, Scarlatti and Schubert too, exploring the roots of Pärt's inspiration and placing his achievement in a Europe-wide context – a perspective that is measured in centuries.
