Andrew Manze conducts the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in its role as the new orchestra-in-residence at the Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, where Haydn worked for so much of his life. The opening work, however, is one of the composer’s celebrated “London” Symphonies, composed for the English capital after Haydn had left the service of his long-time royal employer. Pianist Jan Lisiecki then takes the stage for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, whose sparkling outer movements and soulful central Andante have made it one of the composer’s best-loved works. To complete the programme: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, one of his sunniest and most exhilarating works.
