In the 1980s, the Munich Klaviersommer made a speciality of bringing legends together for one-off festival collaborations – and in that decade, jazz legends didn't come much bigger than the world-famous vocalist Bobby McFerrin and pianist and bandleader Herbie Hancock. This Munich gig came just two years after the pair had collaborated on Hancock's groundbreaking cinematic project Round Midnight, and naturally their set climaxes with a duet inspired by Thelonious Monk. But first comes a sequence of extended free improvisations by McFerrin, and this film captures the unbridled invention of this beloved artist at its freshest and most exuberant.
