In this Musical Moment, Seong-Jin Cho brings together music by two Polish composers, Frédéric Chopin and Karol Szymanowski. Six years after his triumph at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2015, Cho presents four favourite works by the composer: two scintillating Scherzos bookended by a nocturne and a waltz. Szymanowski's Masques, composed 1915–16, opens the programme, offering musical portraits of figures who played an important role in the European cultural imagination: Schéhérazade, the story teller from 1001 Nights; Tristan (from the story of Tristan and Iseult) reimagined as a jester; and Don Juan.
