Robert Schumann's Carnaval is one of the landmarks of Romantic piano music – a kaleidoscope of fantasy and colour, hurled in the face of the philistines by a dreamer who played by no rules but his own. And few interpretations capture that elusive sense of genius on the wing more vividly than the career-defining account that Bavarian pianist Detlev Eisinger gave in 1990 at the Munich Klaviersommer festival. More than any other, this is the concert that made Eislinger's name: Schumann playing of rare spontaneity and intelligence, preceded (in an inspired touch) by three equally inventive Scarlatti sonatas.
