Despite his premature death at the age of 50, Gaetano Donizetti composed around 70 operas, only a handful of which are regularly performed outside Italy today. His tragic opera Poliuto was composed in 1838 for Naples, but immediately ran into problems with the censor because of its religious subject matter and has remained something of a rarity. This 2015 Glyndebourne production directed by Mariame Clément was the opera's belated UK premiere and was widely praised for the quality of the musical performances under conductor Enrique Mazzola. American star tenor Michael Fabiano sings the title role, with Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez as his wife Paolina.
