It was one of the most keenly anticipated events of the 2017 Salzburg Festival: William Kentridge’s new staging of Berg’s Wozzeck, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski with the Wiener Philharmoniker. One of the defining operas of the 20th century, Berg’s setting of Büchner’s fragmentary play unfolds in a stark, atonal language that conveys the extremes of human experience, as Wozzeck’s world – defined by humiliation, poverty and despair – descends into violence. Kentridge’s production, drawing on his work in drawing and film, creates a shifting, fragmented world of projections and layered spaces. Matthias Goerne, long associated with the title role, leads the cast as Wozzeck, with Asmik Grigorian in a breakthrough performance as Marie.
