Abbado and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester: Mahler & Schoenberg

Captured in Vienna's Musikverein in April 2006, this concert sees Claudio Abbado conduct the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, which he himself founded, in music by composers who were at the center of his artistic activity. Schoenberg's wonderfully late Romantic Pelleas and Melisande and Mahler's delicate and "classical" Fourth Symphony were written within a few years of each other and show the richness of Viennese music at the fin de siècle. The performance itself is preceded by an insightful introduction to Schoenberg's symphonic poem – a work characterized by both tonal lushness and chamber music intimacy.
