Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczała in La bohème – Salzburg Festival 2012

Wiener Philharmoniker

124 Min

The moment when Puccini's evergreen tragedy of young love and loss finally came to the Salzburg was always likely to be a special occasion, and so it proves. Damiano Michieletto's 2012 production – the first ever at the Salzburg Festival – evokes a gritty, believably modern Paris, and with Daniele Gatti and the Vienna Philharmonic on glowing form in the orchestra pit, everything here just clicks. Anna Netrebko (Mimi) and Piotr Beczała (Rodolfo) were both at the height of their prowess and esteem, and they vanish within their roles: critics at the time praised both their empathy and their control. Nino Machaidze sings Musetta in a true ensemble performance - proof that even in the 21st century, La bohème retains the capacity to surprise.
