Although Daniel Chorzempa was best known as an organist, the American musician – born in Minneapolis – began his performance career as a pianist in Europe. And this concert from the Munich Klaviersommer festival sees him perform on both instruments, presenting two imposing works composed in homage to J S Bach. Max Reger's Variations and Fugue, composed in 1904, take as their basis the melody of a duet from Bach's Cantata No. 128, which Reger transforms into multiple guises before the complex final fugue. Liszt's work, initially composed half a century earlier, is based on the musical notation of Bach's name (equivalent to B Flat, A, C and B), built up into an equally impressive organ showpiece.
