Erich Wolfgang Korngold saw his 1927 opera Das Wunder der Heliane as his "masterpiece", but after its early triumphs it all but disappeared from the repertoire, and its Jewish composer and his works were banned in the Third Reich. Christoph Loy's 2018 production at the Deutsche Oper finally saw it return to the stage in triumph. The director's intelligence brought new power to the timeless fairy tale, while in soprano Sara Jakubiak and tenor Brian Jagde it boasted singers up to the almost superhuman demands of the leading roles. With conductor Marc Albrecht on hand to awaken Korngold's grand and opulent music from decades of slumber, this revival of an almost forgotten work was acclaimed by public and critics alike.
