This 2022 staging from the Deutsche Oper Berlin sees Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg set in Dr. Pogner’s Private Conservatory. Pogner is planning to transfer it into public ownership, and the winner of the public singing exam to be held the next day, Midsummer Day, will not only take over the institution but also win the hand of his daughter Eva, secretly involved in a relationship with lecturer and therapist Hans Sachs. With an outstanding ensemble cast – including Johan Reuter as Sachs, Heidi Stober as Eva and Klaus Florian Vogt as Walter, her new suitor – this thought-provoking staging asks questions about art, teaching and the nature of love, while ultimately proving as uplifting as any performance of this great work should be.
