Fascinating Works by Leopold Koželuch
Leopold Koželuch (1747–1818) was a prolific Czech composer, pianist, and music teacher whose influence and recognition spread across Europe, especially during his years in Vienna. Renowned for his keyboard compositions and orchestral works, Koželuch played a significant role in shaping the classical style of the late 18th century. Born as Jan Antonín Koželuh in Velvary, Bohemia, he adopted the name Leopold in his twenties to distinguish himself from his cousin of the same name, who was also a composer. He received early music instruction from his cousin and further studies with František Xaver Dušek in Prague. In 1778, he moved to Vienna, where he became a celebrated composer, pianist, and teacher, eventually succeeding Mozart as the imperial Kammer Kapellmeister and Hofmusik Compositor—positions that made him one of the leading musical figures at the Habsburg court.
