Exploring the Musical Genius of Arnolt Schlick with STAGE+

Arnolt Schlick (c. 1455–1460 – after 1521, possibly around 1525) is a towering figure in the world of Renaissance music. Despite being blind for much of his life, this German organist, lutenist, and composer became widely respected as both a performer and a theorist. STAGE+ invites you to discover the fascinating works of Schlick, who is grouped among the "Colorists" and is notable for his pioneering contributions to keyboard and lute music.

Arnolt Schlick's Key Contributions and Notable Works

Schlick's most significant collection is Tabulaturen etlicher lobgesang (1512), which stands as one of the earliest extensive sources of German lute music and one of the earliest published collections of lute music overall. This collection includes both organ and lute works and is central to understanding early 16th-century keyboard and plucked-string repertoire.

Schlick's treatise Spiegel der Orgelmacher und Organisten (1511) is the first German work on organ building and playing. It was highly influential in the 16th century and is still regarded as a landmark in organ literature. His organ music features a sophisticated use of imitation, intricate cantus firmus settings, and polyphony sometimes involving up to ten independent voices—an approach that predates Baroque advances by about a century.
