Emilio Arrieta's Key Works
Arrieta's first major success was the opera Ildegonda (1845/1846), which premiered at the Milan Conservatory and was later performed for Queen Isabel II. His second and last Italian opera, La conquista di Granata (1850), was a dramatic piece with a libretto by Temistocle Solera. He also composed Pergolesi (1851) and Marina (1871), the latter being an adaptation from his earlier zarzuela. Today, Marina is recognized as one of the most beloved works in the Spanish repertoire. Arrieta composed dozens of zarzuelas, but Marina stands out as his most enduring, frequently performed and recorded piece.
Arrieta’s Italian training and royal patronage allowed him to pioneer a unique synthesis of European and Spanish musical traditions. His works are notable for their lyrical beauty and dramatic power, securing his place in the pantheon of Spanish classical music.
