Derek Bourgeois (1941–2017) was a notably prolific English composer, known especially for his contributions to organ, brass, and wind repertoire, as well as his significant roles in music education and leadership within the British music community. Bourgeois studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he earned an Honours degree and a Doctorate. He served as a Lecturer in Music at Bristol University from 1970 to 1984, and later became the Director of the National Youth Orchestra in 1984, a position he held until 1993. Bourgeois then served as the Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School from 1994 to 2002. He also chaired the Composer’s Guild of Great Britain and founded the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain in 1988.
