With STAGE+, delve into some of Croft's most mesmerizing pieces and discover his profound impact on English cathedral music.
Major Works and Musical Legacy
Croft's best-known achievement is the landmark publication "Musica Sacra" from 1724. This collection contains 30 anthems and a full setting of the Church of England burial service, which remains in use today. It was the first such collection printed as a score and is a key part of his musical legacy.
Several of Croft's hymn tunes are still sung today, and his anthems remain part of cathedral and church choir repertoires. In 1700, Croft, in collaboration with an Italian Master, published six sonatas showcasing the then-fashionable Italian style. This collection is among the earliest English examples for solo violin.
Occasional anthems such as "O Clap Your Hands" from 1706 are considered some of his best choral writing.
Influence and Positions
Croft’s education at the Chapel Royal under John Blow was formative and placed him at the heart of English sacred music tradition. He succeeded Blow as organist of Westminster Abbey in 1708 and as Master of the Children and Composer to the Chapel Royal in 1707. He held these positions until his death.
