John Danyel: English Lutenist and Composer

John Danyel, also known as John Daniel, was a renowned English lutenist and composer of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Baptized on 6 November 1564, and believed to have lived until around 1626, Danyel was born in Wellow, Somerset. He was the younger brother of the poet Samuel Daniel.

Notable Works and Style

Danyel is best remembered for his sophisticated and sensitive lute songs, known as ayres. His music is notable for its close attention to text and expressive lute writing, drawing comparisons with his contemporary, John Dowland. Among his surviving works, "Coy Daphne Fled" and "Like as the lute delights" stand out as examples of his expressive text setting. His principal publication, "Songs for the Lute, Viol and Voice" (1606), contains many of his best-known pieces.
