Henry Balfour Gardiner: A British Composer and His Works
Henry Balfour Gardiner (1877–1950) was a British composer, musician, and teacher. He is best known for his choral work Evening Hymn (1908), a classic of the English choral repertoire often performed at Evensong in Anglican churches. Despite his early musical talent—starting piano lessons at five and composing at nine—Gardiner's career was marked by frustration with his academic environment and a self-critical nature, which led him to cease composing by 1925.
Notable Works
Gardiner's works are known for their vitality, orchestral color, and romantic setting. Among his most notable compositions are Evening Hymn (1908), a lush, romantic setting of "Te lucis ante terminum," known for its dense harmonies and subdivisions within the four primary vocal parts. His Overture to a Comedy (1906, revised 1911) is recognized for its vitality and orchestral color. Shepherd Fennel's Dance (1911) is a Percy Grainger-like piece that was once a favorite at the Proms, and A Berkshire Idyll (1913) exhibits a style similar to Delius, with a poignant and expressive side to Gardiner's personality.
Later Life and Legacy
Gardiner stopped composing in 1925 to focus on afforestation in Dorset. Many of his works, including two symphonies, are lost or destroyed, leaving Evening Hymn as his most recognized piece. His music reflects the vibrant orchestral colors and romanticism of the early 20th-century British musical scene.
