Carlo Ambrogio Lonati (c. 1645 – c. 1710), also baptized Giovanni Ambrogio Leinati and sometimes known as Lunati, was a remarkable Italian composer, violinist, and singer. Known for his complex yet soulful pieces, Lonati's music represents an integral part of the Italian Baroque repertoire. His genius is profoundly reflected in each of his works, capturing audiences with his unique ability to blend elaborate melodies with intricate harmonics.

Lonati's Early Life and Career

Born in Milan around 1645, Lonati's early life and musical training remain largely unknown. His career included service as a violinist in the viceroy’s chapel in Naples (1665–1667) and later, he entered the service of Queen Christina of Sweden in Rome in 1668. Here, he led her string orchestra and earned the nickname "Il Gobbo della Regina" ("the Queen's Hunchback") due to his physical appearance. Lonati was famed for both his comedic and virtuosic roles on stage, often singing and playing the violin simultaneously. His career intersected with prominent musicians like Carlo Mannelli and Lelio Colista, and he was a close associate of Alessandro Stradella.

Lonati's Later Career and Legacy

After leaving Genoa, Lonati served the Mantuan court. His final years are somewhat shrouded in mystery, but it's believed that he probably died in Milan. Lonati's music continues to resonate with contemporary audiences, proving his timeless relevance in the world of music.

Lonati was a distinguished composer of operas, cantatas, and instrumental music. His cantatas, in particular, have been admired for their artistry and are regarded among the finest of his era. He composed several operas and vocal works, many of which were performed in the leading theaters and courts of Italy. Additionally, he wrote music for small ensembles and solo instruments, especially violin, complementing his reputation as a leading violin virtuoso.
