Delve Deep into the Soul-Stirring Compositions of Stephen Paulus
Stephen Paulus (1949–2014) was a distinguished American composer, celebrated for his extensive contributions to choral and operatic music. Over his career, Paulus produced more than 600 compositions encompassing choral works, opera, orchestra, chamber ensemble, solo voice, concert band, piano, and organ. His works have earned international acclaim, numerous Grammy nominations, and major awards, including a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2016 for Prayers and Remembrances.
Paulus was best known for his operas—particularly The Postman Always Rings Twice (1982), which made a significant impact on the American opera scene and was lauded by The New York Times. His choral works, noted for their melodic and romantic character, also remain central to his legacy, with frequent performances by leading ensembles worldwide. His musical style is described as lush, melodic, and accessible, often blending rich harmonies with clear lyricism.
Not only a prolific composer, Paulus was also an advocate for new music. He co-founded the American Composers Forum in 1973, now the largest composer service organization in the U.S., and served as the Symphony and Concert Representative on the ASCAP Board of Directors from 1990 until his death.
