John Trouluffe: An Overview

John Trouluffe, also known as John Treloff or John Truelove, was an English composer and editor active during the 15th century. He served as a canon of Probus in Cornwall but is believed to have resided for much of his life in Exeter.

Trouluffe's Musical Contributions

Trouluffe is primarily recognized for his contributions to English sacred music, particularly in the form of hymns and carols. His works are featured in the Ritson Manuscript, a significant source of Middle English choral and liturgical music. One notable piece is Nasciens mater, for which he composed two out of the three three-part settings, and possibly collaborated on the third with a composer named Smert. His music belongs to the late Gothic period of English polyphony, aligning with the broader landscape of choral and liturgical innovation in England at the time.
