Yuri Temirkanov, one of Russia’s most distinguished conductors, is celebrated for his longstanding leadership of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and pivotal work with major Russian operatic and symphonic repertory. Born in Nalchik in 1938, Temirkanov began his musical education at age nine at the Secondary Music School affiliated with the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied both viola and conducting. His illustrious career includes significant tenures as Principal Conductor of the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra (1968–1976), Principal Conductor of the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theatre (1976–1988), and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra from 1988 until his death in 2023. Throughout his career, Temirkanov has been closely associated with landmark performances of Russian classics. His acclaimed productions include Tchaikovsky’s "Eugene Onegin" and "Queen of Spades," Prokofiev’s "War and Peace," Petrov’s "Peter the Great," and Shchedrin's "Dead Souls." His direction contributed to the international resurgence of Russian orchestral and operatic art, with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Kirov Theatre touring extensively across the USA, Japan, and Europe.
