Guerrero's musical output has often received less attention in the past than that of Victoria. The release of an album of Guerrero's works by a Spanish ensemble is therefore all the more overdue. For the program, we deliberately selected a broad spectrum: sacred music, Marian hymns, and secular compositions were intended to underscore Guerrero's versatility. Even his contemporaries appreciated the range of moods and compositional techniques reflected in his works. His eventful life and journey to the Holy Land also contributed to his reputation.
During his stay in the Holy Land in the 1580s, Guerrero became acquainted with the region's rich musical heritage. Despite financial difficulties and the dangers of the return journey—such as attacks at sea—he brought new impressions back to Spain. His works masterfully combine sacred and secular themes in the polyphonic style of the Renaissance. Motets and secular pieces alike demonstrate his ability to create complex musical structures. Through his innovative mode of expression and artistic versatility, Guerrero is considered one of the most important composers of his era.
