The early piano works of Karol Maciej Szymanowski reminded pianist Arthur Rubinstein of Chopin, with elements reminiscent of Scriabin. Nevertheless, he recognized a distinctive personality in Szymanowski's powerful melodies and bold modulations. The two met in Zakopane, marking the beginning of a long friendship that lasted until Szymanowski's death in a sanatorium in Lausanne in 1937.
Born into an artistic family of Polish nobles, Szymanowski grew up on the family estate in Tymoszówka, Ukraine. His family's strong patriotism shaped him throughout his life. After his studies in Warsaw, he joined the group "Młoda Polska w muzyce" (Young Poland in Music), which was heavily influenced by the German musical tradition. His pre-war music showed influences from Wagner, Reger, and Rubinstein, with Reger's contrapuntal style being particularly evident in his early piano sonatas.
During the war, Szymanowski devoted himself intensively to literature and traveled to various countries. His interest in German music waned as he turned to Persian Sufism and, inspired by diverse cultures, composed "Des Hafis Liebeslieder" (The Love Songs of Hafiz). French Impressionism also left a distinct mark on his works.
After the 1917 revolution, which drove his family from their property, Szymanowski led a nomadic life between Warsaw, the Tatra Mountains, and Paris. With works such as his First Violin Concerto, his reputation in Poland grew. Despite personal difficulties, he continued his career as a pianist and strove to remain creative.
His Four Etudes, Op. 6, demonstrate Szymanowski's early talent, with echoes of Scriabin and Chopin. The Métopes (1915) heralded a new phase in his work, influenced by Ravel, Debussy, and his intensive exploration of musical structures.
The Etudes Op. 33, as well as Masques and other compositions, demonstrate Szymanowski's versatility and artistic maturity. These works reflect episodes from his life and musical development, shaped by his love of poetry and mysticism.
Szymanowski's unique style manifests itself in subtle harmonies and vibrant structures that transport the listener to a world of emotion and introspection. His works captivate through the fusion of traditional elements with innovative ideas, reflecting his unmistakable artistic vision.
