Pianist Craig Taborn's third album as a bandleader on ECM Records is titled "Daylight Ghosts." Following his solo work "Avenging Angel" and the trio recording "Chants," Taborn assembled an impressive lineup for this 2017 quartet album. His previous projects garnered widespread acclaim, with The Guardian particularly praising his captivating musicianship, meticulous attention to detail, and remarkable ability to create compositional narrative structures within improvised performances. Alongside Taborn, who plays piano and electronic keyboards, the quartet comprises two other luminaries of the New York music scene—woodwind player Chris Speed and bassist Chris Lightcap—as well as drummer Dave King, Taborn's fellow Minnesotan and a member of the alternative jazz trio The Bad Plus. The band members' musical influences are diverse, ranging from rock and electronic music to various world music genres and diverse forms of jazz improvisation. In this recording, dynamic elements merge with atmospheric soundscapes, acoustic with electronic sounds, rhythmic grooves with haunting melodies to create a vibrant artistic expression.
