Plus Ultra 'On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Tomás Luis de Victoria, who died between August 20 and 27, 1611, it is worthwhile to take a closer look at the most important composer of the Spanish Renaissance.
Surprisingly little is known about this extraordinary musician, who, alongside Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Orlande de Lassus, is considered one of the leading figures of the late Renaissance. A new 10-CD collection by the English Ensemble Plus Ultra, conducted by Michael Noone, now presents for the first time his most important compositions, which were previously only available individually in Spain. This comprehensive edition contains more than 90 works, including three previously unreleased masses, six Magnificat settings, and other well-known pieces from Victoria's Madrid period (1586–1611). This collection represents the most comprehensive compilation of the music of this Catholic priest, who devoted himself exclusively to the composition of sacred music.
