Water
On her album "Water," Hélène Grimaud impressively and movingly demonstrates how composers from diverse eras and styles worldwide have been influenced by the fascinating dynamics of water in their work. The French piano virtuoso brings water droplets to life through the music of Takemitsu, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Albéniz, Liszt, Janáček, and Berio. This musical interpretation inspired artists such as Nitin Sawhney and Douglas Gordon to collaborate creatively. The multi-award-winning Sawhney, known as a composer, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist, composed seven connecting transitions between the pieces and produced the album. Scottish artist Gordon was also captivated by Grimaud's musical talent. Together, they created the installation "tears become… streams become…" for the Wade Thompson Drill Hall at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. There, Grimaud performed her album "Water" live on the piano, surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of water and almost complete darkness. ]
