Morning, midday, evening: three times of day, and three early symphonies with which Joseph Haydn is thought to have introduced himself at the Esterházy court in 1761. More than 250 years later, Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico return to the site of that debut, performing the works in the Haydn Hall of Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt. Alongside the performances, the film weaves in anecdotes and historical detail, from Haydn’s working life at court to some of the stranger episodes in his posthumous fame, creating a vivid portrait of Haydn in his early Esterházy years and of the place that shaped him.
