"Every musician should be interested in every style" said the late Austrian cellist Heinrich Schiff (1951–2016) – "because there is no single style without relation to other music." And in 1988 Schiff put his musical principles into action in this formidable solo recital from Munich. Bach's solo cello suites were at the heart of the cellist's musical life, and he concludes with a masterly account of the Third Suite. But first, he explores the music of his own lifetime: Lutosławski's inventive homage to the Swiss patron Paul Sacher and the Serenade for solo cello by Hans Werner Henze, both played with supreme authority.
