Recorded at the Münchner Klaviersommer in 1992, Andreas Boyde performs two works of contrasting character: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 81a, "Les Adieux", and Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata op. 1. Beethoven’s score, written on the threshold of the composer’s middle period, balances formal clarity with a heightened sense of personal expression. Berg’s single-movement sonata, composed more than a century later, condenses late-Romantic harmony into a tightly argued modern statement. Boyde was described by Joachim Kaiser as one of the most significant pianistic talents to emerge from the former GDR, and this performance shows us why.
