John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists present a programme of music by J. S. Bach and two of his forebears, Heinrich Schütz and Johann Hermann Schein, that attempts to offer consolation in the face of great loss. At the heart of the programme are Schütz's beautiful Musikalische Exequien of 1636 and Bach's remarkable early cantata "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit" – also known as Actus Tragicus – which depicts an individual's journey from death to paradise. Recorded at end of an extensive tour in June 2022, the concert demonstrates Gardiner's unparalleled experience as one of the most important Baroque experts of last half century.
