Solti conducts Wagner: Favourite Overtures & Preludes

Chicago Symphony

Production Date: 02/06/1976

Arguably the most influential Wagner conductor of his generation, Georg Solti was music director of the mighty Chicago Symphony Orchestra for a remarkable 22 years. Here, filmed in concert in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, in 1976, they present an irresistible selection of favourite Wagner overtures. Following the dramatic, windswept seascape of Der fliegende Holländer we are taken to the medieval world Tannhäuser, whose overture vacillates – as does the opera's protagonist – between piety and sensuality. To complete the programme: the intoxicating passions of the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde and the hustle, bustle and exultation of the Act 1 prelude form Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
