Born on April 6, 1902, in Paynesville, just outside Livingston in Sumter County, Alabama, Hall learned traditional spirituals from her parents and quickly became known in her local community for her remarkable voice. She married Nash Riddle, a coal miner, in 1917 and had a daughter, Minnie Ada. After her husband's death in the early 1920s, Hall supported herself as a cook and washerwoman.

Although Hall never became a professional singer, her performances captivated folklorists and musicologists. Alabama folklorist Ruby Pickens Tartt introduced Hall and fellow folk singer Dock Reed to the renowned folklorist John Lomax in 1937. Lomax was collecting music for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Library of Congress. Lomax praised Hall, describing her as having “the loveliest voice I had ever recorded”. Hall participated in several recording sessions, capturing spirituals and blues that became a significant part of the Library of Congress’s folk music archives.
