About Gerardo Matos Rodríguez
Gerardo Matos Rodríguez (March 28, 1897 – April 25, 1948), affectionately known as Becho, was a highly influential Uruguayan musician, composer, and journalist. Born in Montevideo, he was the son of the owner of the Moulin Rouge, a well-known local cabaret. Although he initially pursued architecture, he soon devoted his life to music and creativity.
Notable Works
Matos Rodríguez’s most celebrated composition is La Cumparsita ("The Little Parade"), written in 1917 while he was a student. It quickly became—and remains—one of the most recognizable and iconic pieces in the tango repertoire worldwide. In 1931, he collaborated on the film score for Luces de Buenos Aires, which featured the legendary tango singer Carlos Gardel.
