Garry Walker: A Profound Musical Journey
Garry Walker, the renowned Scottish conductor and cellist, was born in Edinburgh in 1974. He studied cello under Ralph Kirshbaum and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University, graduating in 1995. Walker gained international attention after winning the Leeds Conductors Competition in 1999.
Throughout his career, Walker has held several distinguished positions, including Chief Conductor of the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz since the 2017/18 season, Music Director of Opera North from the 2020/21 season, Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Visiting Professor of Conducting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has also had a close association with Red Note Ensemble, Scotland’s contemporary music group.
