Ludwig Daser (1526–1589) is one of the most influential Kapellmeisters and composers of the Munich court chapel in the 16th century. Although his name was overshadowed by those of Senfl, Lasso, and Lechner, his contribution to the development of the court chapel was crucial. After his death, his work was increasingly overshadowed by these more famous contemporaries.
Daser devoted himself almost exclusively to church music and left behind a substantial body of work, including 22 masses, 24 Latin motets, approximately 34 German sacred songs and psalms, as well as other compositions such as the Magnificat, Passions, and organ pieces. His musical career began modestly; he was trained by Senfl and performed in the Munich court chapel as a boy. His years as Kapellmeister were marked by difficulties, which ultimately led to his dismissal in 1563. Nevertheless, he remained connected to music and in 1572 assumed the position of Kapellmeister at the Stuttgart court, where he converted to Protestantism.
His compositions reflect both his artistic convictions and his theological stance, and are characterized by his engagement with various 16th-century church music movements. The Ensemble Cinquecento's selection celebrates Daser's stylistic range, including a choral mass, motets, and chorale settings for Catholic and Protestant services.
Daser's works demonstrate high compositional quality, inventiveness, and symbolic depth, qualities that continue to be recognized today. His musical diversity and integrity make him an outstanding figure in music history.
