Hélène Grimaud
With her album "For Clara," pianist Hélène Grimaud explores the multifaceted world of German Romanticism. At its heart are her interpretations of Schumann's Kreisleriana, Op. 16, Brahms' Intermezzi, Op. 117, and his Lieder und Gesänge, Op. 32. Grimaud has long been deeply engaged with Schumann's Kreisleriana and is convinced that one can discover new aspects of such a work throughout one's life. Her strong connection to the German Romantics, especially to Robert Schumann, his protégé Brahms, and their relationship with Clara Schumann, significantly shapes the album. The recording of Brahms's Lieder und Gesänge, Op. 32, was made in collaboration with baritone Konstantin Krimmel, with whom Grimaud previously collaborated successfully on the album "Silent Songs." This release was praised by BBC Music Magazine for its natural and expressive performance. Together, Grimaud and Krimmel masterfully convey the themes of love, loss, devotion, and disillusionment that are present in both the lyrics and the music.
