Filmed at the Concertgebouw in May 2025, this irresistible concert brings together Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Paavo Järvi and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a programme spanning the 20th century. Estonian composer Ester Mägi’s Vesper (1990) opens the programme in a mood of stillness and concentration before Khachaturian’s 1936 Piano Concerto explodes in a burst of rhythmic drive and distinctive colour, providing a vivid showcase for a virtuoso of rare brilliance. To conclude, Petrushka, written in 1911 for the Ballets Russes in Paris, an early highpoint of Stravinsky’s creativity, evokes a magical fairground world of vivid characters and quicksilver shifts of mood.
