Filmed in late May at the Seoul Arts Center, Yekwon Sunwoo returns to his home audience in a programme that juxtaposes Schubert and Liszt. The winner of the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition opens with one of the great pillars of the Romantic repertoire: Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959, its four movements unfolding from the poised opening to the inward world of the Andantino and the expansive final Rondo. After the interval, the focus shifts to the flair and theatricality of Liszt: the Rigoletto Paraphrase, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 and the Mephisto Waltz No. 1 – virtuosic showpieces guaranteed to bring the house down.
