In the words of its composer, György Ligeti's Piano Concerto represents "frozen time – an object in imaginary space evoked by music in our imagination." This film captures a very specific moment in time: the concerto (in its final form) was little more than a year old when it was performed at the 1989 Munich Klaviersommer by two of Ligeti's greatest champions: pianist Volker Banfield and conductor Elgar Howarth, directing the Munich Philharmonic. But every concert at the Klaviersommer has a twist, and Howarth and Banfield have an irresistible "encore" up their sleeve: the youthful Burleske by local hero Richard Strauss.
