The German jazz pianist Joachim Kühn has been called a "musical cosmopolitan", an artist whose playing "defies all categorisation" – and since becoming the first great champion of free jazz in the communist DDR, and his subsequent, sensational, defection to the West, he's consistently demonstrated his credentials as one of the boldest and brightest lights in European jazz. He was a natural for the genre-defying Munich Klaviersommer festival and this pre-millennium solo set from the elegant surroundings of the Bayerische Hof finds him at his inimitable best, in repertoire that ranges from Bach to Kühn's lifelong inspiration Ornette Coleman.
