Filmed at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in 1991, this set captures Gonzalo Rubalcaba at a moment when his reputation as one of jazz’s most original pianists was rapidly taking hold. Leading his quartet, Rubalcaba moves with ease between Afro-Cuban roots, modern jazz language and the wider songbook, blending rhythmic drive with a striking sense of colour. His own pieces sit alongside a reimagined "Bésame Mucho", Charlie Parker’s "Moose the Mooch" and Jerome Kern’s "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", all shaped by the elastic interplay of Reinaldo Melian, Felipe Cabrera and Julio Barretto.
- Soloists:
- Gonzalo Rubalcaba (Piano), Reinaldo Melian (Trumpet), Felipe Cabrera (Bass Guitar), Julio Barretto (Drums)
