Penderecki conducts Penderecki: Sinfonietta No. 1, Viola Concerto

Recorded live at the Alte Oper Frankfurt in 1994, this concert documents Krzysztof Penderecki directing Sinfonietta Cracovia in a programme devoted to his own works. At its centre stands the Sinfonietta No. 1, alongside three concertante pieces: the Capriccio for Oboe and Strings, the Viola Concerto and the Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra. Irena Grafenauer, Mariusz Pędziałek and Tabea Zimmermann take the solo parts in music that reflects Penderecki’s distinctive language of the period, balancing concentrated forms with a vivid sense of instrumental colour.
