Recorded at the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich in 1994 as part of the Munich Klaviersommer, Jazz Meets the Symphony does exactly what it promises: Lalo Schifrin bringing his band together with the Munich Radio Orchestra for a set where big-band swing and orchestral colour share the same stage. At the piano and on the podium, Schifrin is joined by James Morrison, Ray Brown and Grady Tate in a programme that ranges from his own pieces to tributes to Ellington, Monk, Miles and Armstrong. There’s plenty of give-and-take between soloists and orchestra, a few stylistic detours along the way, and, to top it off, a high-energy run at the Mission: Impossible theme.
