Few figures in 20th-century music cast a shadow as long as Miles Davis, and this 1988 performance from Munich captures him deep into his final creative period, still reshaping his sound and refusing to look backwards. Surrounded by a razor-sharp band including Kenny Garrett and Marilyn Mazur, Davis moves through the electronic textures and hard grooves of works like Tutu, Portia and Jean Pierre, alongside unexpected turns such as Time After Time. By this stage his appearances already carried the aura of major events, and in retrospect it is especially poignant to witness one of jazz’s defining figures still performing with such intensity and purpose only a few years before his death.
