Because of his expertise in Italian, French, and German-Austrian repertoire, it is easy to overlook the fact that Claudio Abbado was also a passionate interpreter of Russian music, as demonstrated by this 2008 concert from the Lucerne Festival. With his virtuoso Lucerne Festival Orchestra, he conducts Tchaikovsky's rarely performed, grippingly naturalistic Shakespearean fantasy The Tempest as wells as the suite from Stravinsky's breakthrough ballet, The Firebird. Rachmaninov's broodingly Romantic Second Piano Concerto completes the programme, with French pianist Hélène Grimaud as virtuosic soloist.
