Claudio Abbado had a very special way with both Mozart and Schubert: his Italian heritage, combined with his profound understanding of the Austro-German symphonic tradition, gave him a special affinity with the music of Vienna. The Vienna State Opera Chorus's All Saints' Day concert is a Viennese institution, and for the 1986 concert Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic joined the chorus in the Musikverein for a fresh but heartfelt performance of Schubert's late Mass in E Flat Major, plus a sequence of Mozart's finest shorter sacred works. Some of the most admired singers of the 1980s – including Jerry Hadley, Marjana Lipovšek and the young Karita Mattila – join Abbado and his all-Viennese forces: a truly captivating occasion.
