Cellist Kian Soltani is joined by pianist Julien Quentin for a recital from the Verbier Festival 2021. The programme is built around two great 20th-century sonatas. Debussy first dubbed his late work "Pierrot is angry at the moon" and in it pushed the cello to its expressive limits with music mixing raw power with humour and elements of jazz. Shostakovich's sonata, composed in 1934, reflects an emotionally turbulent period of his life. Between the two works comes Schumann's passionate Adagio and Allegro of 1849, while the beguiling slow movement from another 20th-century sonata, Rachmaninoff's, brings the programme to a conclusion.
